Artworks was founded in 1989, initially designing and producing periodicals, brochures, posters and training materials for NGOs involved in community development and in the struggle for human rights and democracy. In the lead-up to the national elections in 1994 Artworks was involved in producing material on voter education.

After 1994 the NGO sector was shrinking, and Artworks started diversifying its client base to include leading corporate companies, public institutions, as well as provincial and local government.
